Patrick had a poor childhood due to a loss of his older brother when he was 6, alcoholism with both parents, domestic violences. When he was 7, He would wander around the streets of where he lived by himself. One day, a small workout gym popped up in his town. Little Patrick wandered around the gym and walked in and out .There was a lady behind the counter, not sure how old she was since he was very little, who was very pretty and kind. The kind lady asked little Patrick if she could read him a story. So a little while of that afternoon, she sat down with him on a small bench in front of the counter to read a story to him. Patric, who is well over in his 40s, still remembers that being read a story and taking interest from someone else was totally melting his heart. Little Patric felt so seen and safe for the first time of his life; she was a magical being to him during that short time in the afternoon. He had a crush on her but not a romantic one. He even felt that he secretly wanted to be adopted by her. 

This all happened from being malnourished for a solid attachment and connection. Children need a safe home base and someone who is interested in them, notices them, seeks out time with them, and shares a special connection with them. If children don’t get this from a safe parent, they’ll seek it out elsewhere. This can often become a lifelong habit of seeking external care from a self-deficit of love. Deficits of connection with people take place in different forms: being a teacher’s pet or wanting to answer all the questions in the classroom from a kindergarten all the way through to a college, having an adoption fantasy.
