Adults who survived from childhood trauma often struggle with limerence in the present time. Limerence is a present emotional preoccupation of a person or obsession with them. It can arise as an intense infatuation or longing with someone which does not have to be sexual. Limerence will last a long time and it’s often intrusive in people’s lives. It may occur when a relationship becomes real or with someone they personally know or someone they have never met, even celebrities or someone they met once and now they’ve idolised. It can also make people feel intense shame from waiting for a rescue by having a strong connection with an imaginary person instead of focusing on their present lives or partners. Some people may get themselves into troubles like stocking, acting outside or boundary issues in relationships.
Limerence may look similar to crushes, there are some significant differences. The biggest difference between crushes and limerence is how it makes you feel about people. A crush could be simply punctured by the person becoming human to you whereas limerence idolises the person as a perfect object. The clue to Limerence is the melancholic nature that comes with these feelings; such as desire to be loved, idealisation, longing, desperation.
